Three tips for choosing the right wedding photographer
Choosing the right photographer for your wedding is probably one of THE MOST important things you can do to ensure your big day is all you’ve ever dreamed of. As a fellow wedding photographer here are my top 3 tips to make sure you and your fiance choose the right photographer right off the bat.
#1. Figure out what is important to you. Are you wanting to book your DREAM photographer to cover everything for you? Do you want to use multiple photographers? Are Engagements more important to you than your wedding day coverage? I cannot even tell you how many emails I get and clients I have booked saying that they are in a bind after getting photos back and being unhappy with them. This doesn’t mean the photographer necessarily did a bad job. It could mean that the photographer and client were just not a good fit, miscommunication, or expectations just weren’t met. Most photographers with years of experience working with brides and their families are going to charge more. Photographers with more experience tend to know how to stay on track time-wise, work with other professionals well, capture the little details that you will probably forget and make your big day as stress-free as possible. If you are on a tighter budget try finding someone who may not have as much experience but you can tell has a natural eye and is very consistent in their work. Photography is definitely one of those things you get what you pay for!
#2. Since you’re going to spend A LOT of time with your photographer make sure your personalities mesh well and that you get along. From your first email, phone call or meeting make sure you feel comfortable talking with them. You WANT to feel like you can speak up and really let your photographer know what you are envisioning. You DON’T want to feel too intimidated or afraid to let your photographer know if you’d like something changed. We all want to leave the wedding day feeling like we’ve made a forever friend not counting down the seconds until the wedding day is over.
#3. Consistency is KEY! Instead of just scrolling through someones Instagram and think oh she’s really consistent. Ask to see a complete wedding gallery or session. Check for consistency in their style/editing/mood, posing and lighting. Obviously, there is going to be a little variation due to the time of day, season, etc but everything, in general, should look cohesive.
BONUS tip…Let the photographer educate you on what she can offer and do for you but RUN away if it starts sounding too much like a sales pitch. Your photographer should be very comfortable just talking to you and most importantly listening to you! When people start selling selling selling and not listening to your wants and needs it probably means they either don’t have much experience or they are desperate for the job. Neither is a bad thing but just make sure you are aware when people have a hard time listening it is a sure fire way to have misunderstandings and the chances of you being unhappy are much much higher.
Now onto this beautiful couple and their thoughts on their magical day!
